Story summary
Spoiler note: This summary describes the novel’s setup and arc. For a fully spoiler-free experience, read the Themes section first.
Saba is kind, innocent, and deeply religious, a young woman raised with strong moral values and a simple, unshakable trust in Allah. She marries Arfeen, a union opposed by his family from the start. For a brief time, the couple is happy: Arfeen, though weak-willed, genuinely loves Saba and senses something almost spiritual in her.
That happiness is the target. Driven by hatred, Arfeen’s mother schemes to be rid of Saba the only way that will work in their world: by destroying her honor. Saba is falsely accused of infidelity, and when the Holy Quran itself is brought forward for testimony, Arfeen’s mother swears a blatant false oath upon it. The desecration stuns Saba into silence; the “evidence” of the oath forces Arfeen to divorce her.
In a matter of days, Saba loses everything: her marriage, her home, her reputation. Yet the most remarkable thing about her is what she does not lose, her faith. She does not curse her accusers or beg the world for justice. She turns to Allah alone, enduring with sabr (patience) while the lie poisons everyone who touched it, across years and even generations.
Main characters
Saba
Innocent, devout, and wronged beyond measure. Saba’s power is all inward: she refuses to let injustice corrupt her soul. Her quiet endurance, and her eventual mercy toward her accusers, makes her one of Urdu fiction’s most respected heroines.
Arfeen
Saba’s husband, educated but weak-hearted, easily bent by his mother’s will. His tragedy is the failure to trust the woman he loved when she needed him most.
Arfeen’s mother
The architect of the lie. Her false oath on the Quran sets the tragedy in motion, and its consequences follow her and her family for years.
Themes

- Injustice and false accusation: how one lie can destroy many lives.
- The misuse of the sacred: a false oath on the Quran as the story’s darkest moment.
- Sabr (patience): silence as strength, not weakness.
- Forgiveness and redemption: mercy toward those who wronged you as the highest victory.
- Honor and women: how “family honor” is weaponized against the innocent.
